Marisa Miller: Siren on a Siren

Marisa Miller in Surfing Magazine's Swimusuit Special 2008,
with the Siren Surftech Hot Tamale model.

We've never met Marisa, but she's just like family to us. Every week, she comes by the house by way of the Victoria's Secret Catalog and reminds us of what it's all about: Having fun; traveling the globe; being an ambassador for all things young and sexy. So you have no idea what an honor it was to find her riding a Siren Hot Tamale model for her feature in Surfing Magazine's Swimsuit Special 2008.

Marisa, you are definitely on the team!

Siren R&D: New Space-Age Coating Now Available

Chroma-Tech coatings create a super fast matte
finish that is unparalleled for beauty, as this perfect
Orange to Yellow fade illustrates.

Siren's SUP construction methods set the industry standard for durability, performance, and beauty. We achieve this through the use of super-fused EPS cores, super tough epoxy resin, double 6-oz fiberglass top and bottom and most importantly double over-laps for maximum strength and durability where the rail endures the brunt of all punishment from your paddle.
Now we have discovered something completely new, and we are very proud to be unveiling it just in time for summer (in the Southern Hemisphere, anyway).
The basic construction method remains the same. But rather than applying color to the board by airbrushing the foam core, we apply a new super-toughened, space-age coating to the finished fiberglassed board at the end of the construction process. This opens up a whole new world of vibrant, race-car quality color work. After the color goes on, we apply a clear matte overcoat to further protect the surface of the board. This matte clear-coat finish has the added benefit of moving very efficiently through the water--much in the same way that the America's Cup Yachts employ a fine-sanded matte finish to their hulls for maximum "slippage" through the water.

Called Chroma-Tech, we are very proud to be able to add this new option to our SUP line that not only makes the boards faster, but also more beautiful. Boards built with our new technology cost $50-$150 more (depending on the complexity of the color work), and because the color is on the surface of the board, one should use appropriate care not to drag the board through the sand or drop it on rocky surfaces. And you probably already know to NEVER clean ANY surfboard or SUP with Acetone--use gasoline or "green" citrus-based cleaners which are safer for you and your board.

Available by custom order only as of November 2009. Click here to send us an email to start one rolling.

Sandisk USB Flash Drive Survives Agitate, Spin, Rinse.

As you may have noticed, we have been doing a lot work in the Siren digital world, and my USB flash drive has become my virtual briefcase. You've probably already got one, and know first hand how cool it is to be able to take your digital life with you where ever you may go.

Upside: Easy to slip into your pocket.
Downside: Easy to forget that you slipped it into your pocket.

So of course, I just threw my jeans, flash drive and all, right into the washer; then tossed everything into the dryer. When I found my little flash drive, I was sure it was toast.

But no! I plugged it in to find every file intact. What a relief! Thank you Sandisk.

First 10'0 Siren SUPs Launched!

As announced a few weeks ago, our new 10'0 version of the now iconic Siren SUP has hit the Siren Shop. Available in light blue with an ice yellow deck, and mint green with an ice yellow deck.

What makes our SUP so special? We've incorporated some tricks to make the board narrower, lighter and more maneuverable than any other, and at the same time much more stable. A step along the rail line creates a "pontoon" effect for stability. A rounded pintail allows for easy direction changes, whether in waves or flat water. Conservative rocker curve yields a forgiving feel in the water, creating a sure-footed feeling. Finally, the blunt nose shape allows us to keep the outline more parallel, which further enhances the board's stability and speed.

Ciao!

Exhaustive Review: Nine Plus Catsuit

After hinting at getting cold in early October, ocean water temps finally dropped off a cliff after a cold front blew through Nor Cal last week; whipping up fierce winds down here in San Diego. The perfect opportunity to put the new Nine Plus Catsuit through its paces!

The most unique characteristics of the catsuit are it's front-zip entry system and full-body smooth skin neoprene. Stylishly speaking, this gives the suit a retro-vintage Bond-Girl sex appeal unrivaled in any other suit. From a functional point of view, the front-zip system moves all the zipper mechanics to the front of the suit and well out of hair tangle range. A subtle point, but one worth noting if you've ever had to battle a Velcro dread lock. Beneath the zipper, Nine Plus utilizes a "Boob Hood" which is attached to the inside of the suit and slides over you head to create a barrier between you and any water that might leak through the zipper or neck.

Sliding into the "Boob Hood"

A better look at the "Boob Hood"

Ready for Action!

The smooth skin neoprene, supplied by world renown rubber innovators Yamamoto, is warmer than anything else available and blocks the wind like no other neoprene can. In the past, you would have to go with the custom made (and therefore really expensive) suits from Japan in order to get a suit with the vastly superior Yamamoto rubber. So being able to get a Yamamoto suit from Nine Plus is a major...Plus. Furthermore, Yamamoto rubber uses a renewable limestone base rather than petroleum, keeping the suit as "Green" as possible.

For me personally, this suit's sleeves and legs are a little short. Luckily, I'm down with the wetsuit Capri look. But if you're on the tall side, be aware that there is no "Tall" size option in their line.

Setting new trends in wetsuit fashion: The Capri Suit

Having owned the first generation Catsuit, circa 2007, I can tell you that the biggest drawback was its susceptibility to tearing--a well known downside to smooth-skin neoprene. By exercising a little care, however, the potential for tearing could be avoided, but who wants to exercise care when they are frothing for a surf? That's why this year Nine Plus is using Yamamoto's new tough skin neoprene with much higher tear resistance. So far so good, but only time will tell....

So to sum it all up....

PROS:
  • Extremely warm, light and flexible.
  • Updated Yamamoto "Tough Skin" no-tear neoprene (so far so good....)
  • Front-zip system eliminates hair tangle issues
  • Bond-Girl "I just ditched my scuba tanks and now I'm going to pirate your yacht" styling

CONS:
  • If you're too tall, this suit will leave your wrists and ankles exposed, which could be an issue if you're charging Icelandic barrels. Next season, it would be great to see longer arms and legs so they could be trimmed and hemmed as necessary.
  • No key pocket! Tie your key to your bikini-top string and stuff it in front of the boob hood.
