Burlap and Herringbone: Two Words that Make Siren Hungry.

You probably already know that burlap is one of our favorite mediums for creating Siren bags, purses and banners. And if you're from San Diego you'll understand what I mean when I say that the mere mention of the word burlap also makes us very hungry.

Burlap, the restaurant.

The brainchild of celebrity chef Brian Malarkey, Burlap (burlapeats.com) is the Del Mar dining sensation made famous by its daring fusion of cowboy and Asian culinary sensibilities; making for some very wild twists on old-fashioned favorites. From the angry red snapper, deep-fried head-on (that's probably why he's angry), to the 34 ounce miso-hollandaise rib eye, the fare is as crazy and unexpected as the decor.

Burlap, the jute fabric.

But, being mermaids and all, you probably wouldn't be surprised to find out that Siren is big on seafood. That's why we were so excited when we got the latest word from the Brian Malarkey camp: Opening soon, a new venue in La Jolla named Herringbone with seafood lovers in mind. With a menu promising to create an "ocean bazaar" vibe, we can only guess at the details; but with categories as ambiguous as "hot" "cold" "green" and "crust" (crust!?), we're ready to be surprised.

Stylized herring, Herringbone mascot.

Hey, I just got it! It's a fish restaurant, a fish has bones, and a herring is a fish! Herringbone isn't only a fabric pattern, it's also the best play on words in the fine (seafood) dining biz. Herringbone opens sometime in late May. Full review pending....
