Vintage Tools of the Surfboard Shaping Craft

The Skil 100 planer is the iconic tool of the surfboard trade; an entire industry having been built upon it's ability to mow foam with tireless abandon. This particular planer has enjoyed quite the life, first entering service shaping boards for the esteemed Surfboards Hawaii in the '60s; later graduating to the woodworking trades, and finally taking a break in the early '90s. Here she is after a rejuvenating aesthetic restoration. All metal construction; 40+ years of service without a glitch. They don't make 'em like they used to....

Siren Abstract-Art Hot Tamales in Stock
Stop by the Siren Shop to check out the new Hot Tamales in stock now. We're doing a run of boards featuring beautiful hand-poured resin art like on the board pictured below:

The Siren Hot Tamale Model is our most versatile longboard. Small surf, big surf, mushy surf; the Hot Tamale can make the most of all conditions.
A 2+1 fin setup and slight "V" bottom make the Hot Tamale surf short from the tail while subtle nose concave and soft rails make noseriding a breeze, even in big surf. A progressive rocker makes it shine in beach-break surf, and a narrow, racy tail allows for snappy vertical maneuvers.
Be sure to check one out before this run is sold out.

Siren R&D: New Space-Age Coating Now Available

finish that is unparalleled for beauty, as this perfect
Orange to Yellow fade illustrates.
Siren's SUP construction methods set the industry standard for durability, performance, and beauty. We achieve this through the use of super-fused EPS cores, super tough epoxy resin, double 6-oz fiberglass top and bottom and most importantly double over-laps for maximum strength and durability where the rail endures the brunt of all punishment from your paddle.
Now we have discovered something completely new, and we are very proud to be unveiling it just in time for summer (in the Southern Hemisphere, anyway).
The basic construction method remains the same. But rather than applying color to the board by airbrushing the foam core, we apply a new super-toughened, space-age coating to the finished fiberglassed board at the end of the construction process. This opens up a whole new world of vibrant, race-car quality color work. After the color goes on, we apply a clear matte overcoat to further protect the surface of the board. This matte clear-coat finish has the added benefit of moving very efficiently through the water--much in the same way that the America's Cup Yachts employ a fine-sanded matte finish to their hulls for maximum "slippage" through the water.
Called Chroma-Tech, we are very proud to be able to add this new option to our SUP line that not only makes the boards faster, but also more beautiful. Boards built with our new technology cost $50-$150 more (depending on the complexity of the color work), and because the color is on the surface of the board, one should use appropriate care not to drag the board through the sand or drop it on rocky surfaces. And you probably already know to NEVER clean ANY surfboard or SUP with Acetone--use gasoline or "green" citrus-based cleaners which are safer for you and your board.
Available by custom order only as of November 2009. Click here to send us an email to start one rolling.

First 10'0 Siren SUPs Launched!

As announced a few weeks ago, our new 10'0 version of the now iconic Siren SUP has hit the Siren Shop. Available in light blue with an ice yellow deck, and mint green with an ice yellow deck.
What makes our SUP so special? We've incorporated some tricks to make the board narrower, lighter and more maneuverable than any other, and at the same time much more stable. A step along the rail line creates a "pontoon" effect for stability. A rounded pintail allows for easy direction changes, whether in waves or flat water. Conservative rocker curve yields a forgiving feel in the water, creating a sure-footed feeling. Finally, the blunt nose shape allows us to keep the outline more parallel, which further enhances the board's stability and speed.
Ciao!

Siren Kristy Murphy Wins Dempsey Contest; Raises Coastal Preservation Awareness
Kristy Murphy not only won the women's longboard division, but also upset the men-dominated SUP division by placing 5th overall! In the end, it was all for fun and to raise awareness of WiLDCOAST's initiative to preserve the native beauty of our coastline.
From the press release:
From the press release:
"With more than 180 participants, the 6th Annual WiLDCOAST Dempsey Holder Memorial Ocean Festival and Surf Contest was the largest surfing competition ever held in South San Diego County. On Sunday October 18 on the south side of the Imperial Beach Pier, more than 500 spectators lined the beach to watch surfers from all over San Diego County surf beautiful 2-4 waves.Congrats to all who participated! See you next year!
This year the Dempsey highlighted the progress that has been made along the U.S.-Mexico border to clean up the coast. With a new sewage treatment plant under construction on the U.S. side of the border, three new sewage plants operating in the Tijuana-Rosarito Beach region, and the signing of legislation by Governor Schwarzenegger to fund cleaning up Tijuana, the WiLDCOAST “Clean Water Now” campaign has made a significant contribution to protecting our coast and ocean."

Rainbow Sandals' Battle of the Paddle

We work with Kevin Shaughnessy over at Channin for all of our surfboard and SUP R&D exploits. It's rare to find someone in the industry that is not only adept at translating desired function into form, but also has a hands-on, in the water understanding of how boards work.
Unfortunately, no board is immune to an angry, rocky coastline at high tide, so when a rogue wave swallowed up and crushed his race board just days before the race, he had no choice but to borrow my 11'0 Siren SUP. As a rule, the longer the board, the faster it paddles, so in a race full of 12'6 boards, he definitely had his work cut out for him. After 5 grueling miles, he came in a respectable 71st out of 100+ racers. Not bad considering he was under-gunned by a foot and a half.
It was really cool to see a Siren board in the race! Next year, I think we Siren girls are going to give it a go! There were actually quite a few women battling it out for their shot at the $5500 purse; very inspiring. Stay tuned for the Siren Racing SUP!

Picasa is a great way to publish your photos to the web and share your adventures with your friends. We thought it would be cool to have our Gallery page automatically update and link to our Picasa Web Albums (it's also a lot easier than manually updating the Gallery!). After cracking the whip on the Siren Web Dev Team, we're happy to announce the new and improved Gallery portion of the site. Click the "Gallery" button at the top of this page to view (or you can click here) . You will see an assortment of photo albums that we've created--click on any of them to view all the photos.

Kialoa Paddles: Now in Metal Flake!
Metal flake, more commonly referred to as glitter, has been a staple in the Siren Surfboards line since the beginning. In fact, Channin, the factory that builds our boards, actually pioneered its use for the open-molded wet-layup lamination technique (the technical name for how custom surfboards are glassed) many years ago. Now if only someone would make a metal flake clad paddle....

Enter Kialoa Paddles, who have just introduced metal flake as on option on their paddles. Here I am at Rainbow Sandal's Battle of the Paddle checking it out first hand. Kialoa's motto, "Technology and Tradition Together on the Water," is really apparent in everything they do. And with a great team to test the equipment and provide feedback, it's no wonder why they are able to build one of the best paddles out there.

SUP by Boat
From Kristy Murphy's Blog:
I miss Florida, well I don't miss the flat spells, but with a SUP and a boat everyday is an adventure no matter what size the surf is. Although my last 2 days visiting my family in Jupiter where blessed with 2 ft. peelers, for the most part there were no waves to be found. So, my friend Lindsey and I took the boat out to look for some new paddle spots and adventures. The boat took us to some cool mangrove canals and out in the ocean we found a manta ray to paddle with. The boat is an added plus, but really all you need is your board, paddle and sunscreen to have some really good fun!

I *Heart* NY: 2nd Annual Montauk Surf & SUP Retreat
Just wrapped up our second annual Montauk Sessions in Montauk, NY with an awesome group of ladies. The northeast dished out lots of rain, then finally on Sunday came SUNSHINE! The waves went from challenging to fun, and despite the crazy weather it was a blast. When the waves were too choppy and big, we went Stand Up Paddling on Lake Montauk. The lake offered a protected bay out of the wind, where we could get the hang of the the SUP boards and practice paddling techniques. After the paddle we hit up the famous Surf Lodge for awesome food and mojitos! On Sunday, the surf was perfect for everyone to really push their surfing skills to the next level. Everyone conquered fears, perfected turtle rolls and got some awesome rides! The sun and perfect little peeler waves lasted through Monday and Tuesday, so the ladies scored some super ultra mellow days.
Big, Big shout-out to all our sponsors who helped make the Montauk Sessions a wild success!

Siren Demo Rocks Tidelands Park

Today's Siren SUP Demo at Tidelands Park was a huge hit. SUP enthusiasts came from near and far to take the Siren line of SUPs for a spin under the Coronado Bridge. Plenty of good weather, good friends, and good fun. This time around was especially awesome as we had quite a few paddlers that had NO prior SUP or surfing experience, yet effortlessly found their stride on the water. Now that's what we call a success! So cool to be a part of helping someone discover a new passion.
Lots more pictures available here:http://picasaweb.google.com/sirensurf.com/SirenSUPDemoAtTidelandsParkCoronado

Thanks to everyone who came down and helped to make our Demo so successful! Thanks Mr. S for the great burgers and sausages! And, of course, a very special thanks to our sponsors, Kialoa Paddles, Costa del Mar Sunglasses, Surf Hut Surf Shop, and Wild Coast!
