Rainbow Sandals' Battle of the Paddle

We work with Kevin Shaughnessy over at Channin for all of our surfboard and SUP R&D exploits. It's rare to find someone in the industry that is not only adept at translating desired function into form, but also has a hands-on, in the water understanding of how boards work.
Unfortunately, no board is immune to an angry, rocky coastline at high tide, so when a rogue wave swallowed up and crushed his race board just days before the race, he had no choice but to borrow my 11'0 Siren SUP. As a rule, the longer the board, the faster it paddles, so in a race full of 12'6 boards, he definitely had his work cut out for him. After 5 grueling miles, he came in a respectable 71st out of 100+ racers. Not bad considering he was under-gunned by a foot and a half.
It was really cool to see a Siren board in the race! Next year, I think we Siren girls are going to give it a go! There were actually quite a few women battling it out for their shot at the $5500 purse; very inspiring. Stay tuned for the Siren Racing SUP!

SUP by Boat

A girl and her boat, a match made in heaven!

From Kristy Murphy's Blog:

I miss Florida, well I don't miss the flat spells, but with a SUP and a boat everyday is an adventure no matter what size the surf is. Although my last 2 days visiting my family in Jupiter where blessed with 2 ft. peelers, for the most part there were no waves to be found. So, my friend Lindsey and I took the boat out to look for some new paddle spots and adventures. The boat took us to some cool mangrove canals and out in the ocean we found a manta ray to paddle with. The boat is an added plus, but really all you need is your board, paddle and sunscreen to have some really good fun!

The parental crew, floating around.

Paddling the mangrove canals along the Intercoastal Waterway.

We got to check out this feeding manta ray from our SUP boards.

By Popular Demand: The Siren 10' SUP

We knew this would happen--as the SUP community evolves, and our skills grow, what once seemed unattainable now seems so easy that we wonder why we didn't see it from the get go. Remember a few years ago when all the SUPs out there were like 12'6" long by 34" wide? The Siren 11'0 seemed so tiny! It has been a trip seeing people who thought they could never manage anything smaller than the 11' effortlessly scoot around the lakes, rivers and waterways on our 9'0. So as more and more interest shifts to the 9'0, we've been getting a lot of requests for something that bridges the gap between the 11' and 9' Siren SUP--a balance between the manuverability of the 9'0 and the stability of the 11'0. And so with all of that in mind, and prompted by our loyal SUP devotees, we proudly introduce the 10'0 Siren SUP.
We should have a couple in stock by next week!

I *Heart* NY: 2nd Annual Montauk Surf & SUP Retreat

Just wrapped up our second annual Montauk Sessions in Montauk, NY with an awesome group of ladies. The northeast dished out lots of rain, then finally on Sunday came SUNSHINE! The waves went from challenging to fun, and despite the crazy weather it was a blast. When the waves were too choppy and big, we went Stand Up Paddling on Lake Montauk. The lake offered a protected bay out of the wind, where we could get the hang of the the SUP boards and practice paddling techniques. After the paddle we hit up the famous Surf Lodge for awesome food and mojitos! On Sunday, the surf was perfect for everyone to really push their surfing skills to the next level. Everyone conquered fears, perfected turtle rolls and got some awesome rides! The sun and perfect little peeler waves lasted through Monday and Tuesday, so the ladies scored some super ultra mellow days.

Big, Big shout-out to all our sponsors who helped make the Montauk Sessions a wild success!
Siren Surfboards by Channin, Costa Del Mar Sunglasses, Keep -A-Breast, Wildcoast and special thanks to our good friends Cat Lippincott and Steve White for all the great local knowledge!

Siren Messes with Texas

After a 2 day drive through Arizona, New Mexico and West Texas, 2 girls, 7 boards, 7 paddles, clothes and a cooler came roaring into Austin on a lovely Memorial Day! We came into town with a few days to spare before the clinics started, which was great because our Austin posse, Camille, LC, Greg, Carrie and Angela had lot's of activities lined up for us to do during our stay there. The first thing we wanted to do was paddle Town Lake, also known as Lady Bird Lake, and get the lay of the land, or water in this case.

Town Lake is a paddlers paradise! Perfect flat water paddling, no motorized boats allowed, clean, lot's of beautiful wildlife, it is great! Our friend Camille brought her dog Sadie Sue with us to paddle that first day. Sadie fell in love with paddling and ended up paddling with us everyday of the camp, and she became the official mascot and got the most attention from paparazzi!!
There are heaps of other lakes around the Austin area to paddle, but for the Siren Clinic we stuck to Town Lake since there is no boat traffic and is fairly protected from the wind. Each morning we would meet at the base of the MOPAC bridge, do a quick land lesson then we would hit the water. The group would paddle towards downtown Austin then we would take a detour through Barton Springs. Barton Spring is BEAUTIFUL! It is a naturally spring fed creek, crystal clear water that was perfect for what I call SUP Snorkeling, checking out what is beneath the water from standing tall on the Stand Up boards. Turtles, Bass, Alligator Gar, and the rare Texas Blue could all be seen in the creek.

On May 29 Austin Canoe and Kayak hosted a SUP in-store class and demo. We had a nice crowd gather to check out the new Siren SUP line, meet the Siren team and everyone got to take home some cool SUP swag from Siren, Costa Del Mar and Kialoa! Congrats to Carrie Leighton for taking home an awesome new pair of Costa Del Mar's, the BEST polarized sunglasses out there!
We meet so many great people in Austin and cannot wait to come back! We are already planning another trip there to paddle and eat BBQ as soon as possible.

Thank you to all my great sponsors who support me and helped make this clinic possible and a success! Siren Surfboards and Kevin Shaughnessy, Costa Del Mar sunglasses, Kialoa Paddle, Wildcoast and a big thanks to my great friends in Austin who took such great care of us during our stay! Also, a big shout out to the newest superhero out there picking up trash all over our American waterways and oceans, Super Cat and her Plastic Revolution!

Another Waveless Day ;)

While the forecasters were calling for another surf-less day, we decided to once again defy the reports and enjoy the strangely tropical weather. Sure enough, we caught the few good waves that popped up with the tide change.

    Kialoa's New Methane Paddle

I just wanted to give a shout out to Kialoa Paddles for creating such a rad SUP Paddle. I have their new Methane Paddle and it is awesome! Definitely the best paddle I have put in my hands yet. It has an oval shaped shaft that molds to your hands perfectly, the T shaped handle is super functional and has a smaller 8 inch wide blade. For all you ladies out there listen up! This is a great paddle for us! Being a woman paddler who rides a smaller SUP board (I am 5'3 and 130 pounds) I have found that the Methane takes much less energy to move through the water because of the smaller blade but still provides that quick momentum when you need it with the least amount of effort. All the elements you need in a paddle for the surf as well!

Did I mention it just feels like "butta" in your hands? When you put this paddle in your hands, you will not want to let it go. It makes paddling just that much better and if you have not had the chance to pick up a Kialoa paddle yet, do it soon! You can find your local dealer by visiting www.kialoa.com

Stand Up Paddling on a Waveless Day....

    SUPSUP
    SUPSUP

It's hard not to answer the call when winter weather pushing 80 degrees lures you outside. Sunshine coupled with a serious lack of swell leaves one option: stand up paddling. Here are a few shots from last weeks run of Santa Ana....
